Our objects

A community interest company (CIC) limited by guarantee

Kitabna - Our Book is a community interest company (CIC), limited by guarantee, which means we hold non-profit status. There are no shareholders, only a Director and Advisory Board Officers. Any profit we make from booksales and consultancies goes straight back into our work of developing and sharing resources which share values of equality, hope and cross-cultural understanding, as laid out in our Articles of Association. You can read more about community-interest companies and independently contact the UK's Office of the CIC Regulator here.

We know this sounds very formal and legal, and most of Kitabna's work is full of the warmth of creativity. But our social mission is what has driven Kitabna since 2014, and holds us accountable and on track with our goals. Our Objects, as laid out in Kitabna – Our Book’s Articles of Association, are as follows:

“The objects of the CIC are to carry on activities which benefit the community and in particular (without limitation) to offer creative methods to persons affected by conflict and disaster, and any organisation or individual carrying out humanitarian work, nationally and internationally, in the pursuit of dignity, education, social justice and inclusivity for all persons - in particular those persons affected by conflict and disaster.

By humanitarian work we mean any endeavour seeking the dignity and wellbeing of any community affected by war and disaster, developing cross-cultural understanding, centring the voices of those affected, developing their opportunities for creative and cultural expression.

By creative methods we mean any activity including the use of artistic design, including, but not limited to, the creation and publication of multi-lingual children’s books, the delivery of story-writing workshops, and the development of psychosocial educational tools.

These activities intend to share our values of equality, inclusivity and social justice with future generations, and will therefore be carried out in consultation with the affected communities, and in consultation with an Advisory Committee of Officers appointed by the Directors, whose members hold relevant experience and knowledge of the contexts we work in.”
